Hi, I’m Missy. Welcome to Simply Rhody.
MY SITCH
I’ve spent the better part of all my life growing roots in snowy, cloudy, beautiful Central New York. I was pretty well convinced Syracuse was my forever home, so I spent the better part of a decade “making a name for myself” as an educator (read: I was the quasi-Energizer Bunny of the middle school English classroom).
AND THEN…
My husband accepted a job in Rhode Island <insert dark clouds, depressing music, tears – lots and lots of tears – here>. Goodbye, house. Goodbye, family and friends. Goodbye, career. Yup! Life as I knew it was over – I was certain of that. At the time, I didn’t recognize how crazy my Syracuse life had been due to over-commitment and my inability to say “no” until I gave up everything and moved in with my husband and my dog.
SIMPLY RHODY
Once I got here, life simplified. I breathed again – probably for the first time in twelve years. With no job, no known identity and a world of possibility in front of me, I felt oddly liberated. And then it hit me: Life’s too short to be bogged down by stress and complication. It sounds so divine, doesn’t it? It was – in theory. Sadly, this bohemian mentality didn’t exactly jive with my expensive food, travel and home decor habits. Minor details, really, if you can successfully ignore the ever-present reminder that one-salary-doesn’t-pay-for-fine-dining-and-Restoration-Hardware. Dang.
That’s when Simply Rhody was born. I wasn’t about to punish my new life’s tastebuds, eyeballs and spirit because I didn’t have a job in the Ocean State. Instead, I’d cook. I’d “do it myself!” and I’d focus on finding Missy v.2.0. I had nothing but time…and palpable laziness. So, maybe I would cook and I would do (some) things myself and I would do some introspection (if by “introspection” you mean “sleeping in”), but I was going to do it the easy way.
Simpy Rhody is a reflection of that new life. It’s a compilation of my healthy, easy-to-make but deceptively delicious recipes, some projects I’ve done to beautify my home/life that doesn’t require any fancy equipment, and some humbling life lessons I’ve learned in the art of keeping things simple.
